DROUGHT – SIMONATO KEPT GOING

15 June 2022

The prolonged warm and dry weather last spring, and the long period of drought caused by the huge scarcity of rainfall and snow, left much of our country in a major water deficit, bringing breeders and farmers, first and foremost, to their knees.
In Veneto alone, recorded rainfall for the year was 771 mm compared to an average of 1100 mm. The proportionally lowest levels of rain fell in our local plain and alpine foothill areas.
2022 was the least rainy year on record since 1961, 22% lower than the 1991-2020 average, with lower-than-average precipitation (-39%) between January and July. The anomaly was most evident in the North (-33%), followed by the Centre (-15%), and the South and Islands (‑13%).
Images broadcast on TV and the desperation of farmers should force us to reflect on the true value of water, and we should all undertake a virtuous journey and use our water resources in the most appropriate way to avoid unnecessary waste.
Simonato's greenhouses have always made the best possible use of water to irrigate the organic crops, providing our facilities with a complex underfloor heating system and applying a flow/reflow irrigation system to optimise the use of water, valuing it as a precious and finite resource.
