Certified BIO lavender: Simonato, the only producer in Italy

15 April 2021

Lavender is an intensely fragrant shrub that can be grown in the garden or in a pot. It is a highly resilient plant that adapts to various climate conditions, though it favours a warm, dry climate. It is known for its lilac, spike-shaped flowers and is classified as an aromatic plant thanks to its incredible scent and beneficial properties.

It is for this reason, specifically, that there has been great demand for lavender in recent years, including in Italy.

Interesting facts about lavender
Known since ancient times, lavender was used by the ancient Egyptians during mummification and for cosmetic purposes, while the Romans used it to scent their bathwater, a practice from which its name derives (from the Latin “lavare”, "to wash"). Pliny the Elder described it as one of the most commonly used aromatic herbs, due to its refreshing, calming properties.

Lavender began to become popular around 1600 and was used in perfume-making. Ladies at the time would also sew little bags of lavender flowers underneath their skirts, to keep their undergarments smelling fragrant, and perhaps it is this custom that is behind the continued use of scented bags in drawers and to keep moths away from fabrics.
